Vienna takes itself seriously, and it has earned the right. This is a city where sitting in a café for three hours over one coffee is not loitering but a protected cultural practice, literally: UNESCO lists the Viennese coffee house as heritage. Everything on this page is chosen in that spirit, the palaces and the opera house alongside the quiet café where nobody will hurry you out.
How to use this guide: the tabs at the top move you between itineraries, places to see, restaurants, hotels, experiences and day trips. On any tab, open the map for a much clearer picture of where things sit and how Vienna is arranged around the Ringstrasse, with the old centre inside it. Vienna is the capital of Austria, home to around two million people on the Danube, and for centuries the seat of the Habsburgs, who ruled from the Hofburg in winter and Schönbrunn in summer. In 1857 the emperor ordered the medieval walls torn down and replaced with the Ringstrasse, the grand boulevard that still loops the old centre past the State Opera, the parliament and the great museums. Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and Strauss all worked here, which is why the concert calendar never really stops.
Whether you have a weekend or a full week, the sections below cover how to get around, where to stay inside or just outside the Ring, where to eat beyond schnitzel, and how to see the palaces and hear real music without paying tourist prices.
