Geneva sits at the western tip of Lake Geneva where the Rhône flows out, with around 200,000 people in the city itself and roughly half a million across the canton. It is French-speaking, wrapped almost entirely by France, and it punches far above its size: the European headquarters of the United Nations is here, along with the Red Cross and CERN. The Jet d'Eau, which throws water some 140 metres into the air, started life in 1886 as a pressure valve for a hydraulic plant and stayed because everyone liked it.
